Some exciting news was revealed yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con during the Batman: Arkham Origins panel hosted by Eric Holmes, creative director at WB Games Montreal; Mark Pacini, creative director of the portable game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate; Roger Craig Smith, new voice of Batman; and Troy Baker, new voice of the Joker.
The biggest news of the day would have to be the reveal of the new Batman: Arkham Origins trailer featuring the deadly and agile new assassin, Copperhead, who is being voiced by Rosa Salazar. While Copperhead was originally portrayed in the comics as a man in a snake costume, he has had quite the revamp this time around and is now a poison wielding, female contortionist. Faster and deadlier than even Catwoman, Copperhead slithers around in the darkness and strikes with such fierceness that she manages to take down Batman with almost no effort. To pull off such snakelike movements it took three motion capture people: a stunt woman, a woman from Cirque du Soleil, and a martial artist. DC Comics likes this new revamped Copperhead so much that she will be making a debut in the New 52 comic series shortly after the game is released.
We were also given a little information on the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3Ds spin-off game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Pacini explained that it would have some similarities to the Metroid series. He also implied that we may be seeing new characters coming to it by teasing that it “really opens up the rest of the DC Universe to the Arkham franchise,”.
How about some new costumes and skins for us to play with? We already know that Deathstroke, who has his own move set and gadgets, is playable in challenge maps for anyone who preorders Arkham Origins. We have also seen the Adam West 60′s Batman costume and the Azbats Knightfall costume, which are both PlayStation 3 exclusives. But we have now been shown two more amazing costumes, which will be available across all platforms, Batman: One Million (left) and the Worst Nightmare Batman (right). While there was no word on how to unlock the Batman: One Million costume, we have learned that the only way to unlock the Worst Nightmare Batman costume will be to take the time to finish everything in the game. It is a skin that shows us how thugs on the street see Batman and it is “for absolute masters of the game”, I don’t know about you, but I plan to be an absolute master and serve some justice to all those thugs.
The last bit of news has me pretty excited and as anxious as ever to get my hands on this game. During a Q & A portion of the panel, a fan asked about Robin and Batgirl. As this is a prequel, Robin has not yet appeared in the timeline and thus won’t be showing up in this game. But Holmes leaves us with something to look forward to and dwell on with: “As for Batgirl, you’ll have to play the game to find out.”
Lots of things to keep us excited and anticipation this game, and I’m sure there is more news to come the closer we get to release. You can pick up Batman: Arkham Origins for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on October 25, 2013. And don’t forget about Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate for PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3Ds also hitting shelves on October 25, 2013.
